In many eastern religions, the lotus flower symbolises the continuing life cycle because it closes and submerges under the water at night and in the morning, resurfaces and blooms again. Temple reliefs in ancient Egypt show it was worshipped in Pharoanic times. The 'Lotus Sutra' - the flower of Buddha's teachings - is one of the most important texts in Mahayana Buddhist teachings. Ground seeds from the lotus are an ingredient in 'moon cakes' prepared during the Chinese 'Moon Cake Festival'. Lotus flowers are offered to temple deities throughout South Asia and are widely used in traditional medicine in Thailand and Japan.
