A 19th century etching of the sacred ka'aba inside the Great Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The black stone is the centre of the ritual circumambulation performed by pilgrims during the annual haj. It is covered with the kiswah, a cloth richly embroidered with Islamic calligraphy notably the shahahda or profession of faith.
