The Golden Temple in Amritsar is where every Sikh aspires to pray. The 'holy of holies', it is built on the shores of an ancient lake where many sages, including Guru Nanak offered prayers. The temple was started by the fifth Guru Arjan in the late sixteenth century. The foundation stone was laid the Sufi mystic Harzrat Mian Mir and the architecture reflects both Hindu and Islamic characteristics. Photo: Paul Gapper.
